C. Thomas (Thom) Nulty is a principal in the consulting firm Finding The Better Way, Inc. The firm’s mission is to find the better way of doing almost anything through knowledge, dedicated effort and desire.
Mr. Nulty has more than 30 years of experience in the travel industry. In January 2003, he retired as the president and chief operating officer of Navigant International (NASDAQ: FLYR). During his nearly four years as president, the company grew to be the second largest travel management company in North America where they handle over $6 billion in travel arrangements annually for their clients. The company also grew to have global operations in 19 countries. During his tenure, the company was named to the Forbes “Best Small Companies” list for two consecutive years, and shareholder value increased by an average of 25% per year. Prior to joining Navigant, Mr. Nulty was president of Associated Travel, a large regional travel management company known for its industry leading technology. Associated was purchased by Navigant in 1997.
Mr. Nulty began his career with American Airlines where he spent 14 years holding various staff, line and executive positions. He was then senior vice president of marketing for Carlson Travel Network at their corporate headquarters. He then joined Continental Airlines as vice president and general sales manager. Mr. Nulty also served in the U.S. Army as an artillery officer, public information officer and general’s aide, achieving the rank of captain prior to his discharge.
Mr. Nulty is recognized as an expert in the travel industry and is frequently quoted in major news publications, including The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, The Los Angeles Times, Investor’s Business Daily and The New York Times. He is a regular guest on CNN appearing multiple times each month to discuss all facets of the travel industry. He has appeared several times as a guest on NBC’s Today Show to discuss the travel industry, airline labor problems, and AQUA, Navigant’s innovative, cost-savings computer software program that he helped develop while at Associated Travel. He has also appeared as a guest on ABC Evening News and on Fox News Network.
Mr. Nulty is a sought after public speaker. He has addressed groups at the National Business Travel Association convention, the Association of Corporate Travel Executives convention and the Lufthansa City Center Global Assembly among others. He is known for his high energy, motivational, straight talking style.
Mr. Nulty is currently writing a book that gives travelers unique advice about how to maximize their traveling experience. As a frequent traveler himself, he has personally encountered most situations and has learned how to make the most of them.
Mr. Nulty is active in his community. He has served as a trustee of the Orange County Museum of Art and as a member of the Dean’s Advisory Board for the Graduate School of Business at the University of California at Irvine. He was instrumental in developing the Breast Cancer Awareness and Education program at Navigant. He is especially proud that this effort encouraged other travel industry companies and organizations to join in the crusade.
Mr. Nulty attended the University of Utah where he received an athletic scholarship, studied economics and business administration and was a member of the school’s varsity swimming team. He and his family reside in Southern California.
